Excursion to Paestum
Your adventure begins with a pickup from your accommodation in Ascea, followed by a drive to Paestum, a site recognized as a World Heritage Site since 1988. Are you ready to delve into the rich history of this ancient settlement?
Upon arrival, we will immerse ourselves in the archaeological remains of this historic city of Magna Graecia, established circa 600 BC under the name Poseidonia in tribute to the sea deity. It later fell under Lucanian control, adopting the name Paistom, before transforming into a Roman settlement known as Paestum.
During our visit, we will explore the iconic Doric temples of Hera I, Hera II, and Athena, where our guide will share fascinating insights into the architectural features and historical significance of each structure, providing a stunning backdrop against the lush landscape of the plain.
Next, we’ll proceed to the park's museum, where you can discover the remarkable artifacts unearthed from the excavation efforts that revealed this ancient Greek colony. This collection boasts immense historical and artistic value, featuring items such as vases, weapons, and burial artifacts from the Greek and Lucanian necropolis.
Among the museum's highlights are the exquisite frescoes of the Tomb of the Diver, depicting a man poised to dive into the ocean's waters, symbolizing the transition from life to the afterlife. This extraordinary artwork is bound to leave a lasting impression!
Your excursion to Paestum concludes after a four-hour exploration, followed by a return journey to Ascea, where you are expected to arrive at your hotel by 7 pm.
