Excursion to Matera

We will begin our journey early in the morning with a pick-up from your hotel in Palinuro. Prepare yourself for an exciting adventure in one of Italy's most intriguing destinations!

Upon arrival, we will initiate a tour of the historic center of Matera, known as one of the oldest cities in the world, renowned for its distinctive cave dwellings known as the Sassi. Notably, these areas were designated a World Heritage Site in 1993.

As we explore, we’ll venture into the Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, two genuinely remarkable districts. Our knowledgeable guide will share insights into their history, highlighting the living conditions in the 1950s and the city’s transformation that led to its recognition as a European Capital of Culture in 2019.

Strolling through the streets of the center, we will be captivated by several important Baroque churches, including the Matera Cathedral, the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi, and the Church of Santa Chiara. Their beauty is simply breathtaking!

After a short lunch break, participants interested can explore some of the renowned rock churches of Matera, such as the Church of Santa Maria di Idris, Church of San Pietro Barisano, and the Church of Santa Lucia alle Malve.

At the conclusion of our excursion, we will board the bus for our return journey to Palinuro.
