Gravina in Puglia Private Tour
At your chosen time, we will meet in Piazza Benedetto XIII to start a private tour of Gravina in Puglia, located in a crevasse between gorges. We will begin by visiting the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, showcasing a mix of architectural styles, including late Romanesque, Renaissance, and Baroque. This cathedral has faced destruction from a fire and an earthquake.
Next, we will visit the Church of Purgatorio (also known as the Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio), where you will see two skeletons on the tympanum of the entrance door, with explanations provided during the tour.
We will then enter the medieval neighborhoods of Fondovico and Piaggio, exploring the oldest part of the city. Here, we will visit Gravina's rock church and the Church of San Michele, carved from tuff and adorned with Byzantine paintings.
Finally, we will cross the Viadotto Madonna della Stella, an 18th-century bridge offering panoramic views of the ravine. Make sure to take photos!
After an engaging two-hour tour, we will conclude our visit.
