Experience the charm of one of the most picturesque villages in Basilicata through our exclusive private tour of Melfi. Led by a knowledgeable guide, you'll delve into the intriguing history of the Norman Swabian castle and the stunning Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.

Melfi Private Tour

Your journey will commence at a time of your choosing, meeting at the entrance of the Melfi Castle. Your guide will be ready to welcome you outside this remarkable fortress, recognized as the most prominent stronghold in Basilicata and among the largest in southern Italy. Let’s embark on this captivating exploration!

The Castle of Melfi, flanked by ten majestic towers, is perched on a former volcanic hill that offers a commanding view of the town below. Its rich history traces back to the 11th century, initiated by Roberto il Guiscardo and later expanded by Frederick II of Swabia, who chose it as his summer retreat. Over the years, the castle has witnessed significant historical moments... For instance, did you know that six papal councils convened here, including one presided over by the antipope Anacletus II?

As part of the tour, you will visit the National Archaeological Museum of Melfi, located on the castle's ground floor. Here, you can examine archaeological finds from the Vulture region, featuring Daunian ceramics adorned with geometric patterns, as well as armor and bronze vases crafted by both the Greeks and Etruscans. In the Clock Tower, you will be awed by the impressive Roman sarcophagus famously referred to as the 'Sarcophagus of Rapolla'. This remarkable piece, which depicts a sleeping figure on its lid along with Roman deities and heroes on its sides, dates back to the second century AD and originates from workshops in Asia Minor.

The exploration continues through the historic heart of Melfi as we journey towards the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Commissioned by Roger Guiscard in 1055, this church has seen multiple restorations throughout the centuries, with only its bell tower from 1153 remaining original. Inside, marvel at the 18th-century coffered ceiling, pulpit, throne, and organ, all designed in late Baroque style.

Upon wrapping up our tour of Melfi’s main attractions and visiting its remarkable cathedral, we will take our leave and conclude this enriching private experience.
